The superstructure with two shelves flanked by brass columns and surmounted by urn-form finials, over the quarter-veneered tulipwood secretaire drawer inlaid with satinwood ovals opening to a leather-lined writing surface and fitted interior over cupboard doors with conforming inlay; on turned tapering feet.

Cabinet-maker and upholsterer Thomas Blades, is first listed with premises in St. James's market in 1774, and is also mentioned by Thomas Sheraton in his list of master cabinet-makers published in 1803. Blades is recorded as having moved to 114 Jermyn Street between 1790-93 and then to 177 Piccadilly between 1796-1822 where he was in partnership with his son from 1799-1802. In 1803 another cabinet-maker named Palmer joined the firm at which time they began trading as Blades & Palmer until at least 1822. A nearly identical secretaire with a label marked Manufactur'd and SOLD by BLADES & SON at their WAREHOUSE 177 PICCADILLY nearly opposite BOND STREET can be dated to between 1799 and 1803 as it was produced and sold from the firm's establishment in Piccadilly.
