Additional Information

Cabinet-maker and upholsterer Thomas Blades, is first listed with premises in St. James's market in 1774, and is also mentioned by Thomas Sheraton in his list of master cabinet-makers published in 1803. Blades is recorded as having moved to 114 Jermyn Street between 1790-93 and then to 177 Piccadilly between 1796-1822 where he was in partnership with his son from 1799-1802. In 1803 another cabinet-maker named Palmer joined the firm at which time they began trading as Blades & Palmer until at least 1822. A nearly identical secretaire with a label marked Manufactur'd and SOLD by BLADES & SON at their WAREHOUSE 177 PICCADILLY nearly opposite BOND STREET can be dated to between 1799 and 1803 as it was produced and sold from the firm's establishment in Piccadilly. Another labelled secretaire is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Furniture History Society, 1966, pg.109, fig.123A and 125.
