Description

The serpentine crest rail above a back rest with interlaced scrolls centered by rosettes, over an upholstered seat raised on square molded legs joined by an “H” stretcher.

Provenances

By repute, the Smithsonian Institute’s accession number, 1926-21-84, appears in red on the right rear style of the chair.

Illustrated

This chair is clearly after the designs for similar "Gothick chairs" as illustrated in R. Manwaring, The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend & Companion, 1765, pls. 14 & 15.
