Johann Baptist Drechsler was the leading artist of the Viennese school of flower painting at the beginning of the 19th century, specializing in elaborate still-lifes of highly detailed fruit and flowers. The son of the porcelain painter Joseph Drechsler, he began painting porcelain at the age of 16 and rose to become Director of Porcelain Design at the Academy in Vienna by 1807, combining the roles of designer, easel painter and teacher. The large size of this painting is exceptional for Drechsler’s body of work, and distinguishes it as one of his masterpieces.
Drechsler’s work is conserved in the collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, England; the National Galleries of Budapest, Prague, Liechtenstein and Vienna, as well as numerous Austrian and German museums.
