Description
Possibly Irish, each with a cartouche-shaped back of exaggerated form with a serpentine top outlined with leaves and with scrolled leaf supports, the shaped arms with gadrooned edges and gadrooned downswept supports raised on double-pierced scrolls, the shaped seat rail carved with leaves, flame motifs and scrolls; raised on four cabriole legs ending in hairy paw feet, the front two carved at the knees.

The unusual form of these chairs derives from a design for a 'French Chair' included in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1755, pl. XX.
