Additional Information

Casteels was born in Antwerp on October 3, 1684. He studied under his father, Pieter Casteels the elder, after which he left for London with his brother-in-law, Pieter Tillemans, the topographical painter. There he established a successful practice specializing in masterful arrangements of exotic birds in the manner of Hondecoeter. An extremely accomplished artist, he also painted architectural settings and in 1726 published twelve etchings of his own composition. He served as Director of the Kneller Academy in 1711, and two years later briefly returned to Antwerp to become a Master. He retired in 1735 to Tooting and later Richmond, where he made designs for calico printing.
