Description

The rectangular verde antico marble top over an egg-and-dart moulded edge and Greek key-carved frieze above a boldly shaped apron carved with scrolling foliage and C-scrolls on a trelliswork ground; raised on cabriole legs carved with shells and bellflower garlands ending in hairy paw feet.

Additional Information

Irish side tables and case pieces often have heavier proportions than their English counterparts. Friezes on side tables as on this one are commonly much deeper, with the low hanging apron recalling textiles. The carving of the frieze is also distinctly Irish; its execution in low relief is in imitation of the gilt-gesso work found on Queen Anne pieces.
