Oil on canvas
Signed and dated lower left: "Dalby 1850"

Provenance: John, 4th Marquess of Bute (1881-1947), thence by descent
JOHN DALBY is recorded in 1838 as a painter at 38 Stonegate, York, and most likely was a relation to David Dalby, who also specialized in sporting scenes. Although there are some similarities in their depiction of horses, their styles were every different: while David completed more horse portraits and racing scenes with soft, unfocused backgrounds, John was admired for his highly detailed and lively hunting scenes.
